NEW PROJECTS

After the ceasefire agreement was signed beginning of 2002 between the Sri Lankan Government and the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam, Target Agriculture got itself ready to start projects in the war torn areas of the north and east.

No sooner as the A9 Highway was opened connecting the north to the south the Chairman and Managing Director went all the way from the most southern point “Dondra” up to the most northern point “Point Pedro” on the Jaffna peninsula to make an evaluation of the possibilities to start new projects for the resettles in the de-mined areas.


In October 2002 Targets internal and extension officers went first to Jaffna and held several seminars with interested farmers about organic cultivation in collaboration with local NGOs and the GTZ the German Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit.

Shortly after this, similar seminars were held in the Wanni, the stronghold of the LTTE in collaboration with the Deutsche Welthungerhilfe and local NGOs from the LTTE and the government-controlled areas.

We supplied seed material for Passion fruit, Papaya and young pineapple plants.

A model farm is in the progress of establishment to train farmers directly in their area to assist them in resettling their families and to generate first of all the urgent needed nutrition’s for themselves and their children, to enable them to trade in the village to obtain other essential items and once the primary needs are fulfilled to enable this people to market their products through Target Agriculture Pvt Ltd on industrial level to earn foreign exchange to develop the entire north further.


Target Agriculture Pvt Ltd dedicates 2004 for the development of this war torn areas in the north and east.

It is planned to assist the farmers to re-cultivate all their neglected farmlands, which are now again accessible after the ceasefire is in progress. The lands are presently shrub jungles and no cultivation was possible for about 2 decades.
