Most buyers check certifications. Fewer check what the packaging itself is made of. For organic cashews, the wrong packaging material can undo everything the farm worked to achieve.
Is your packaging ready for EU 2027 standards?
When people evaluate organic cashew quality, they focus on taste, freshness, certifications, and food safety protocols. What most buyers do not think about — until something goes wrong — is the packaging itself.
For organic cashews, packaging is not a container. It is the final barrier between a carefully grown, processed, and certified product and the conditions it will face during storage, shipping, and retail distribution. And because organic cashews are naturally rich in healthy oils, they are particularly sensitive to chemical migration from packaging materials — making packaging selection a food safety decision, not just a logistics one
Organic cashews are naturally rich in healthy oils, making them more sensitive to substances that may migrate from packaging materials. Choosing the right packaging is therefore essential to maintaining both product quality and consumer safety.
To address this, Target Agriculture works with food-contact packaging materials that are:
- PFAS-free — addressing growing regulatory and consumer concerns over persistent "forever chemicals" in food packaging, which are now subject to proposed restriction under EU REACH regulations
- MOSH/MOAH-free — reducing the risk of mineral oil hydrocarbon contamination, a known food safety concern in nut and seed products that has drawn increasing regulatory attention across Europe
- Designed to minimize chemical migration and cross-contamination throughout storage and distribution
These packaging solutions help preserve the freshness and integrity of our organic cashews while giving customers greater confidence in product safety.
As food safety regulations continue to evolve, we are also preparing for future European Union requirements, including the upcoming maximum limits for Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) in tree nuts, expected to apply from January 2027. By carefully selecting packaging materials today, we help our customers stay prepared for tomorrow's regulatory expectations.

Two regulatory deadlines are converging on the European market — and both affect how organic cashew exporters need to think about packaging today.
The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) — Regulation (EU) 2025/40 entered into force on 11 February 2025 and will be applied progressively from 12 August 2026. The regulation targets packaging waste reduction, improved recyclability, circular economy alignment, and safer packaging materials throughout the European market. For food exporters, packaging is no longer simply about protecting products — it has become a core element of regulatory compliance, environmental responsibility, and long-term market access.
Simultaneously, the European Union is moving toward maximum permitted limits for Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) in tree nuts — including cashews — expected to apply from January 2027 under the SPS notification submitted to the WTO. For buyers sourcing organic cashews for EU retail, this means their suppliers need to demonstrate MOAH-controlled packaging today, not when the regulation takes effect.
Target Agriculture has been managing MOSH/MOAH risk in its Vietnam cashew operations since 2019 — well ahead of the regulatory deadline — and our packaging material selection is part of that same proactive approach.

Beyond regulatory compliance, sustainable packaging is increasingly influencing purchasing decisions across the food supply chain. European retailers, health food brands, and private label buyers are scrutinizing not just what is inside the pack — but how the pack itself was made, what it is made from, and what happens to it after use.
For certified organic cashew exporters in Vietnam, this creates both a responsibility and an opportunity. Companies that invest in sustainable, compliant packaging solutions are better positioned to:
- Meet evolving retailer and brand requirements without emergency reformulation
- Strengthen buyer confidence in the complete supply chain — not just the product
- Demonstrate environmental responsibility that aligns with organic and Fairtrade brand values
- Remain competitive in markets where packaging standards are only going to tighten
Sustainability in packaging is not a cost — it is a long-term investment in market access and buyer trust.
