From Poverty Alleviation Tree to Global Export: How Vietnamese Cashew Nuts Made History

Behind Vietnam's cashew success lies five decades of resilience and organic farming — a journey that began far from Vietnamese soil.

From the "Poverty Alleviation Tree" to One of the World's Leading Export Commodities

The cashew (Anacardium occidentale) originated in northeastern Brazil. It grew wild along beaches and in some barren lands. In the 17th–18th centuries, the Portuguese introduced cashew cultivation to India, Malaysia, and several East African countries. Today, cashew trees are widely grown across tropical Asian countries.

From Poverty Alleviation Tree to Global Export: How Vietnamese Cashew Nuts Made History

Although cashews were introduced to Vietnam in the 18th century, it was not until 1975 that the cashew tree was officially listed as a crop in Binh Phuoc province. From 1975 to 1990, cashew cultivation expanded and became known as the “Poverty Alleviation Tree” for farmers, especially the Stiêng ethnic community in Binh Phuoc’s mountainous areas. As a result, Dong Nai province (formerly part of Binh Phuoc) was considered the “Cashew Capital,” accounting for more than 50% of the country’s area and output. In the 1990s, Vietnam began exporting cashew nuts to the Chinese market. A notable milestone came after 1996, when Vietnam stopped exporting raw cashew nuts and instead imported raw cashew nuts from Africa to focus on deep processing.

Since 2000, Vietnam has become one of the world’s leading cashew nuts processors and exporters. During this period, farmers concentrated more on cultivation techniques, adopted new high-yield cashew varieties, and benefited from government policies supporting cashew development, which boosted national output. Vietnamese cashew nuts at this stage also met the quality and reputation standards required to enter demanding markets such as the United States and Europe.

Target Agriculture and the Binh Phuoc Cashew Heritage

For Target Agriculture Group, the story of Vietnamese cashew nuts is deeply personal. Our organic cashew supply chain is rooted in Binh Phuoc province — the heartland of Vietnam's cashew-growing heritage. Beyond owning our own certified organic cashew orchards, Target Agriculture actively partners with local cooperatives and works directly with smallholder farmers across the region to ensure a consistent, high-quality supply that meets international organic standards.

What sets our model apart is our long-term investment in farmer development. Through structured training programs, we equip local growers with the knowledge and practices required for organic cultivation — from soil management and pesticide-free growing techniques to post-harvest handling. This hands-on approach not only improves yield quality but also helps farming families transition to certified organic practices, opening access to premium global markets.

This integrated model — combining owned orchards, cooperative partnerships, and farmer training — enables Target Agriculture to fulfill its annual organic cashew export volume while maintaining full traceability from farm to shipment. Every batch of Target Agriculture organic cashews from Binh Phuoc carries with it the heritage of Vietnam's cashew story, the trust of our farming communities, and the quality assurance demanded by buyers in Europe, the United States, Japan, and Australia.

To break into the world's most demanding markets like Europe and the United States — Target Agriculture's processing facility in Vietnam has had to go beyond simply meeting quality standards. In a fiercely competitive landscape where Vietnamese cashews vie against origins from Africa and Cambodia, our factory in Vietnam has focused on what sets Binh Phuoc cashews apart: a naturally rich, crispy texture and a distinctive sweet aftertaste that no other origin can replicate.

This unique flavor profile became the foundation of our product development strategy. At Target Agriculture's Vietnam facility, raw cashews from Binh Phuoc are processed into a diverse range of finished products — from classic roasted and salted kernels, to coconut-coated cashews, to bold wasabi-flavored varieties — each crafted to meet the taste preferences and retail standards of international buyers. It is this combination of origin quality, processing expertise, and product versatility that has enabled Target Agriculture Vietnam to build lasting partnerships with premium customers across Europe, the United States, Japan, and Australia.

Sum up

Although Vietnamese cashew nuts have achieved remarkable success, in recent years the cultivation area has significantly decreased as farmers shifted to other crops. Unfavorable weather conditions have also contributed to the shrinking cashew-growing area. However, despite reduced acreage, the quality and brand reputation of Vietnamese cashew nuts remain strong.

For over five decades, cashew nuts have been a companion to the Vietnamese people, becoming a symbol of resilience and unwavering aspiration. From an agricultural product that helped stabilize the Vietnamese economy, Vietnamese cashew nuts have grown into a proud Vietnamese brand on the international stage — and Target Agriculture is committed to carrying that legacy forward.
